Skeptical doesn't have to necessarily be a negative thing. I think if you allow yourself to second guess things and look at things from a distance you don't immediately run into things blindfolded, so that's a positive.

My father instilled in me an attitude that you couldn't really enjoy yourself unless you had done something to deserve it. So, my childhood was spent working on farms or local shops or, when I got older, in banks.

I think when you've had success, publishers and reviewers and readers are willing to let you try something new if you've already proven yourself. They're excited about what you're doing, you have people interested in it, and actually waiting for it. It's empowering.
