24 is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language science fiction action film written and directed by Vikram Kumar. Based on the concept of time travel, the film stars actor Suriya in a triple role, along with Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen in the female leads
Dr. Sethuraman is a reputed scientist and watchmaker who lives with his wife Priya and newborn son Manikandan in a mansion with a laboratory at Megamalai. In January 1990, on his birthday, he invented a watch with which a person can travel back and forth in time for a maximum of 24 hours. His evil twin brother, Athreya tries to take the watch and kills Priya in the process. Sethuraman escapes with his son and boards a train. Athreya boards the train and distraught on finding the watch and his nephew missing, kills Sethuraman and gets seriously injured while escaping the train.
Athreya uses the watch with Mithran and is shocked to learn that the watch can only let him travel back and forth for 24 hours of the current day and decides to revive Mani, and in order to do so, he instructs Mithran to have the advertisement removed from the newspapers. Mithran then goes to Mani’s house and places the watch on his right hand and leaves. Mani wakes up the next morning and is shocked to see the watch on his left hand. He travels back to the instance of the watch being misplaced the previous night and secretly follows Mithran. Athreya predicts this and manages to fool Mani by pretending that he is Sethuraman, who survived Athreya’s attack as a paraplegic. This shocks Mani, as he enters the room and notices a picture of him as a child with his biological parents. Mani then learns from Sathyabama of the happenings; she had been studying abroad and was returning to her hometown Gopalasamudram for her nuptials on the same train where Sethuraman was trying to escape with Mani; before Athreya had arrived, a badly bruised Sethuraman handed Mani to Sathyabama and pleaded with her to save his son. Sethuraman then faced Athreya in another compartment, leaving his whereabouts unknown. Upon returning home, Sathyabama’s family was shocked to see her with a child and was badmouthed by her society and her marriage called off. Sathyabama’s father was against her decision to save Mani, and she left with him for Chennai to honour the promise given to Sethuraman, sacrificing her whole family to nurture Mani as her own son. Mani tells her that he will unite Sathyabama with her estranged family.
Later, Mani learns from Mithran that his father is going to die soon and wishes to see Priya for one last time by traveling back in time to 1990. Mani modifies the watch and tests it, which reveals the truth about Athreya’s identity (Mani earlier suspected Athreya when he found an extra digit on his biological father’s left hand in the picture, which Athreya didn’t have). He tricks Athreya into revealing the date and time of Priya’s death and gives him a fake watch. Mani uses the original watch to travel back in time to 1990, and Athreya tries to stop him by letting himself thrown towards Mani by Mithran, and touches the watch in the process.
In January 1990, Athreya discovers himself young and healthy again and realizes that Mithran is unaware of the events that had occurred (due to Mithran not being in proximity with the watch or its users) and instructs a different tactic to him and his men to attack Sethuraman. In the mansion, Sethuraman and Priya spot the modified watch on their baby’s hand. Sethuraman gets overjoyed when he finds out that his son travelled back in time to them as their baby, making him the world’s first time traveller, since he had modified the watch not present in his initial design. But then he senses danger; he feels that Mani returned to a toddler’s age as they may not be alive when he was able to speak. Sethuraman takes Priya and Mani and hides them in a secret closet. Athreya arrives and attacks Sethuraman to find the watch. Sethuraman and Priya escape with Mani, and Mithran gets killed when he tries to save Athreya from a deadly fall, distraughting him. Priya and Mani hide in a room as Sethuraman faces Athreya in the garden. The moment Athreya fires a bullet at him, Sethuraman freezes time and lays Athreya before the bullet in his place, thus killing him for good.
Sethuraman then flees with Priya and Mani and boards the train, but not before throwing away the watch upon Priya’s urging. They then meet Sathyabama, to whom Mani immediately bonds with, and upon her request, Sethuraman agrees to teach science to children in a school constructed by her father in Gopalasamudram. The film ends with a young Mani and his family staying with Sathyabama’s family and flirting with a young Sathya.
