Reviews:
This is an enjoyable programmer from Lippert’s Action Pictures with a nice interplay between the lovely Joan Woodbury and Bob Steele. Steele plays a Mountie who is unwillingly assigned to lead Woodbury to a remote region in the Canadian Woodlands. Woodbury’s feisty character all but steals this film from action star Steele. She looks great on horseback.

There is nothing serious here, just plenty of action, and nice interplay between the two principles. Troubled silent screen star Madge Bellamy, who had starred in Fox’s first ever talkie, Mother Knows Best, makes her final screen appearance as the mistreated wife of one of the bad guys.

The video I saw could have been much better. The two-strip Cinecolor was washed, and the images were not as clear as one would like, but these defects in no way took away from the enjoyable factor. Written by Diosprometheus on IMDb.com

Re-colored (exclusively colorized for Grjngo) Classic Western Movie: Stagecoach is a 1939 American Western film directed by John Ford and starring Claire Trevor and John Wayne in his breakthrough role. The screenplay by Dudley Nichols is an adaptation of “The Stage to Lordsburg”, a 1937 short story by Ernest Haycox. The film follows a group of strangers riding on a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory.

Stagecoach was the first of many Westerns that Ford shot using Monument Valley, in the American Southwest on the Arizona–Utah border, as a location, many of which also starred John Wayne. Scenes from Stagecoach, including a sequence introducing John Wayne’s character the Ringo Kid, blended shots of Monument Valley with shots filmed on the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, California, RKO Encino Movie Ranch, and other locations. Similar geographic incongruencies are evident throughout the film, up to the closing scene of Ringo (Wayne) and Dallas (Trevor) departing Lordsburg, in southwestern New Mexico, by way of Monument Valley.

The film has long been recognized as an important work that transcends the Western genre. Philosopher Robert B. Pippin has observed that both the collection of characters and their journey “are archetypal rather than merely individual” and that the film is a “mythic representation of the American aspiration toward a form of politically meaningful equality.” In 1995, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry. Still, Stagecoach has not avoided controversy. Like most Westerns of the era, its depiction of Native Americans has been criticized.

PLOT: A group of people traveling on a stagecoach find their journey complicated by the threat of Geronimo and learn something about each other in the process.

Storyline:
Wes, Vern and Otis are three cowhands on the way to a cattle drive. Coming upon what is to be an omen of their future… an outlaw hung by a group of vigilantes…the trio finds shelter at a cabin, only to discover that their “hosts” are men who have robbed a stagecoach and killed the guard. When an avenging posse attacks the cabin, Wes and Vern escape, only to find that they have become branded as ‘outlaws’ by the posse, who relentlessly pursue them.

Along with its Sister Shoot “The Shooting” (1966), Neither Receiving an Initial American Release (Who was in charge of these things?), both Films are Now Considered Excellent B-Movies and have gained Cult Status.

This one is more Bare-Bones in its Conceit than its Existential Other, it Works just as Well as “The Shooting”, Just On a Different Plane of Existence.

Jack Nicholson seems to Appreciate and Understand “Western Speak” and His Script, is Filled with Scant but Succinct, Spot On Dialog. When the Characters Talk it is from Experience and a Sort of Intellectual Insight. Their Words are Few but Meaningful Learned from the School of Hard Living.

Cameron Mitchell is totally Believable as Nicholson’s Riding Companion, and the other well Known Character Actor Harry Dean Stanton makes His Mark in a Small Role. But the whole Cast seems to be on the Film’s Wavelength and All Contribute to the Experience and None Detract.

Highly Recommended for Nicholson’s Fine Script, Hellman’s Sure Hand Direction, and a Cast of Truly Believable Actors Playing Truly Believable Characters.

“This one is much better in my opinion than The Shooting, which was made about the same time, mainly because the story made sense. The screen writing by a young Jack Nicholson is surprisingly very good.

This was made on a low budget, and is a good example of how movie producers can make very good films without spending many tens of millions of dollars.

There are decent performances by all the cast here. The movie is set in some wisely-chosen locations, and the camera work is very good.

A Mexican peasant evicted from his land becomes an enraged outlaw. He is finally arrested and sent to prison. In the meantime, his only, little son has been given to a wealthy family. Once he has paid his whole penalty, he decides to go and get back both his son and his hidden loot: $200,000 from a bank robbery.

Spaghetti and Chorizo Western , co-produced between Spain and Italy and starred by two ordinary Spaghetti actors as the Italian Guglielmo Spoletini as William Bogart and the Spanish Eduardo Fajardo dealing with a real and violent confrontation . This is not an ordinary oater outing , it’s a Spaghetti with Paella Western crammed with action , shootouts , lots of violence and a thought-provoking as well as sensitive story . It’s a medium budget film with usual actors , good technicians, passable production values and acceptable results . “When a man is partially buried in an avalanche, his younger wife rides to the nearest town, bringing back a handful of dubious characters to the couple’s gold mine, which happens to be in the middle of land controlled by a very dangerous bandit known as Chato.

No doubt inspired in part by Henry Hathaway’s classic Garden Of Evil, Find A Place To Die stands apart from other Italian westerns in that it’s dark and very atmospheric, without any of the flamboyant flourishes typical of the genre.

Set south of the border, this looks great with lots of rugged mountainous terrain, thick wooded areas, and crumbling Spanish architecture. They all add a lot to the movie’s afore mentioned atmosphere.

Sadly, Jeffrey Hunter (who died the following year) is remembered by most people these days only as the predecessor to Captain Kirk in the original pilot episode of “Star Trek”. “Though somewhat standard “gang hunts for gold” spaghetti western fare, it is well-directed and has solid performances. The score is also well-done, one of the better non-Morricone ones I’ve heard. Fast-paced with several nice action scenes, with a couple of great, cold-blooded sudden shootings. The VCI DVD is ok, letterboxed but the transfer is soft and rather noisy throughout, with a lot of grain in dark scenes. The mono sound, though, is rich and well-recorded.
