I think nowadays it doesn’t really matter where we are physically located. We create our own culture around us to a large extent, whether it’s what we’re listening to, what we’re watching, what we’re reading – it can have very little to do with one’s immediate cultural environment. We are in a global culture in that respect.

Growing up in the ’80s in central New Jersey as a weird kid with a blue mohawk listening to the Sex Pistols and dressing really funky, I was bullied pretty badly. It was every single day in elementary school and kept going into middle school, too. I felt totally alone, without a single person there for me.

People think I’m not polite. But, what I have to say to people seems so unnecessary. I can’t be forced. I’d rather just be what I feel. Even when I sing I try to imagine I’m all alone, there’s nobody out there listening. I play with the notes, with the feeling. Each time the song is different for me.

Those who still think listening isn’t an art should see if they can do it half as well.

When I went to Test Pilot School, that’s when we came to Johnson Space Center. And I ended up seeing John Young and listening to him talk and getting a positive influence from him.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
