I believe that writers have a responsibility to evolve the language, whether by introducing new words or new usages. Shakespeare alone is responsible for something like 3400 words and phrases.

The huge difference in my lifetime is that you can just go up to somebody and make a pass. You couldn't do that in the 1950s if you were gay. There were secret handshakes, a secret language. There was nowhere you could go to be romantic outside of people's houses.

Science is the international language, so when we are able to convince countries that good decision-making for human health and animal health is based upon science, that's a real success story for us.

I don't like to hurry. I'm not a conductor of the fast, fiery romantic type. I prefer Bruckner, with the sincerity of his musical language and the huge time spans in which his ideas develop, to Mahler, with his hysteria and self-indulgence.

Students often have such a lofty idea of what a poem is, and I want them to realize that their own lives are where the poetry comes from. The most important things are to respect the language; to know the classical rules, even if only to break them; and to be prepared to edit, to revise, to shape.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.

Everyone learns differently and everyone has unique interests. But surely some techniques and methods are more effective than others.
When you speak in your native language, you don’t have to think about the grammar or the words you use. Correct sentences just come to you. In fact, your brain uses sentences you’ve already seen or heard. If you want to speak a foreign language fluently, you have to learn it the way you learned your native language – by massive input.
Reading and listening will help you develop language intuition. It’s all about putting lots of correct sentences in your head. Then your brain can imitate them, producing similar sentences to express the meaning you want. When you read and listen a lot, paying attention to useful vocabulary, you will soon start to use new words and phrases in your speaking and writing, you will develop language intuition. You will start to feel what sounds good and what sounds ugly – just as you do in your native language.
