“After attaining his qualifications in London and with the blessings of Lord Bertrand Russell, Dr. Gautamdas (Rajendra Kumar) returns to India. But then he decides to re-locate to Japan, which has been devastated by the explosion of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There he meets with other doctors and also the beautiful Meloda (Saira Banu), who was educated in India, speaks Hindi; though now is Japanese. Both fall in love with each other. The movie takes on a meaning beyond a love story and comments on after effects of war anf Indo – Japan relationship as well.

Asha lives a poor lifestyle along with her widowed dad, is in love with aspiring doctor Raj Kumar, and hopes to marry him someday. Raj shifts to abroad for his further studies promising Asha that he would return back and marry her. But Asha father get her married to his friends son Shyamlal before he would die. Asha moves on in life and gives birth to three lovely children. To Asha and Shyamlal’s bad luck, their daughter Bulbul is born with a hole in the heart. Gopal gets a promotion and re locates to Bombay but continues to remain in touch with his family. Meanwhile Bulbul decides to learn piano. One fine day Asha discovers they have a new neighbor next door. To her surprise, he is none other than her past love Raj. Raj and Asha try to re live their past. A man named Mangatram, spys on Raj and Asha. Mangatram constantly blackmails Asha for hiding a secret from the rest of her family. How will Asha deal with her past and present together?
