MOVIE: Lal Chunariya – लाल चुनरिया

SYNOPSIS: Kundan (RomeshSharma) is the only son of a wealthy father (Gajanan Jagirdar), but Kundan keeps bad company, namely that of Ajit (Dheeraj Kumar), who gets him drunk and also takes him to brothels. Getting habitual of visiting brothels, Kundan gets attracted to Gulabbai (Aruna Irani), and wants to marry her, much to the anger of the brothel madame, Ratnabai (Chand Usmani). Rajesh is another of Kundan’s friend, and his father’s employee, he is of good and sober habits, but Kundan generally ignores and mocks him. Rajesh meets with Kamini (Zarina Wahab), the only daughter of a very wealthy man, Shankerlal (Pradeep Kumar), and both eventually fall in love. Kamini’s stemp-mother wants her to marry Ajit, and Shankerlal does not approve of Rajesh, for he knows that Rajesh’s mother is a prostitute. Will Kamini continue to have the same love for Rajesh, despite his parentage? Is Rajesh’s mother really a prostitute?

Synopsis : Sheela too was a modern girl, whose father Ramdas, a jewellery salesman, had sent to her for higher education against the wishes of his orthodox wife. During the N.C.C. parade when Sheela is awarded the gold medal for the being best girl cadet, Prem, a handsome reporter, is smitten by her beauty. He along with his friend Jeevan makes many unsuccessful efforts to attract Sheela. Jeevan in turn refuses to marry Rekha, because she is an old fashioned but Rekha transforms herself into a modern wench and Jeevan falls for her head over heals. Minu, Sheela’s younger sister, is lost in the dizzy circle of the idle rich and finds herself caught in the web spread round her by Mr. Nath, a sinister character. In the nick of time Minu realises the situation and in a life and death struggle, she saves her honour. She has however borught disgrace to the family, which she had deserted at the instigations of Mr. Nath. In an effort to redeem herself, she takes upon heself the blame for stealing the jewellery, which her father was carrying to Delhi for his firm and which he had lost. When she surrenders herself to the police she is shocked to learn that she is wanted for the murder of one Mr. Naidu.

Kundan is a 1955 Hindi social drama film produced and directed by Sohrab Modi for Minerva Movietone.The Screenplay was by Pandit Sudarshan with dialogues by Munshi Abdul Baqui and Pandit Sudarshan. Music was composed by Ghulam Mohammed with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. Nimmi’s dual role in the film as mother and daughter was acclaimed critically, while Ulhas won a nomination in the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor category. The film co-starred Sohrab Modi, Sunil Dutt, Pran, Murad, Baby Naaz, Kumkum, Om Prakash and Manorama.

Usha lives a poor lifestyle with her widowed father, Parmanand, who is the Station Master of Rangpur Railway Station in India. She is smart, intelligent and educated, and is expected to marry someone of equal status. A railway employee, (Pointsman), Kalicharan, would like Usha to get married to Niranjan, who is the DTS of Indian Railways, and this will ensure that Kalicharan’s son will also get employed with the Railway. Both Kalicharan and Parmanand approach Manikbabu, another Railway employee, who wants his semi-senile daughter, Shyama, to marry Arun, a Guard with the Railway. Soon Niranjan’s sister comes to see Usha, approves of her, and goes home to make preparations for a marriage. But Usha has fallen in love with Arun, wants to marry him, and refuses to marry Niranjan, who is twice as old as her and a widower as well. Usha’s decision has an adverse effect on all the local rail employees, and as a result no one is able to avert an accident that takes place between an express and a goods train. Watch what happens when the Government orders an Inquiry into this incident, and the effect this will have on the lives of all railway employees – some or all of whom may be found guilty and may face imprisonment.

Kamal Haasan along with his group of friends: Vijayakumar, Srikanth, Jaiganesh, Ravichandran go to a forest. Kamal is a researcher who studies about the behaviour of snakes (Ichadhari), a kind of snake which takes humanoid form. One of his friend kills the beloved of the serpent, Sripriya, despite the intervention of Kamal. Initially all the other friends ignore Kamal without knowing the seriousness. They all leave the village and the female serpent (Sripriya) vows to avenge for the death of her beloved. She kills all the five friends of Kamal in disguise at some instance and at the end she disguises as latha (Kamal’s love interest) to in order to kill him. In the end Sripriya gets killed and Kamal reunites with Latha and the child of Srikanth.
