Prakash Raj is essaying role of Vengadam the best silk weaver in a small town of Kanchivaram in Tamil nadu. He pledges that he would give his daughter a silk saree in her marriage. His pledge becomes the talk of the town as a weaver could not afford such an expensive saree in pre independence era. He saves up money but his brother-in-law ruins his plans. He starts stealing silk strands from his work place. At the same time he is heading a strike against his owner for weavers pay hike. The strike acts as a deterrent to his pledge. His daughters marriage is drawing near and he gets more desperate to finish the silk saree on time. What will Vengadam do now? Find out for yourself. This performance earned Raj a national award for best actor.

The film was directed by Shakti Samanta, Music by – R D Burman. Synopsis – Vijay is an expert gambler, and has been so as long as he can remember, and has never lost a game. These skills bring him to the attention of the underworld, who are interested in hiring him so that he can do as they ask him to do so. Vijay agrees to do so, and plays successfully, though unknowingly to entrap a patriotic Indian, to give up military secrets. When the Indian police come to know of this, they assign the case to Inspector Jai, who is asked to apprehend Vijay at any cost. The only problem is that Inspector Jai is Vijay’s look-alike, and is not at all a good gambler.
