Here are 10 respectful and supportive ways to deal with someone who has PTSD:
1. Educate Yourself – Learn about PTSD to better understand their experiences and triggers. Knowledge helps you be more empathetic.
2. Be Patient – PTSD healing is not linear. Give them space and don’t rush their recovery or expect them to “get over it.”
3. Listen Without Judgment – Let them talk if they want to, and avoid offering advice unless asked. Just being present matters.
4. Avoid Triggers – Learn their known triggers and help them avoid those situations when possible.
5. Don’t Take It Personally – If they lash out or withdraw, it’s likely due to their trauma, not you.
6. Encourage Professional Help – Gently support their journey to see a therapist or counselor trained in trauma recovery.
7. Create a Safe Environment – Offer consistency, routine, and emotional safety in your relationship.
8. Respect Their Boundaries – They may need time alone or avoid certain conversations. Don’t push.
9. Learn Grounding Techniques – Help them stay present during flashbacks or anxiety by using grounding strategies like breathing exercises or sensory focus.
10. Take Care of Yourself Too – Supporting someone with PTSD can be emotionally heavy. Don’t forget your own mental health and boundaries.
