Conclave live: Cardinals set for more talks after black smoke signals no pope chosen on first day
Black smoke has been seen from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, meaning a new pope has not yet been elected – watch live at the top of this page. The cardinals gathered in the Vatican will therefore continue the process to elect a new head of the Catholic Church
The Vatican conclave will continue on Thursday with as many as four more rounds of voting. A two-thirds majority of the 133 cardinals is required to select a new leader for the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.
Black smoke puffed from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday night, signaling that 133 cardinals sequestered inside had not reached a decision in a first round of voting for a new pope to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.
The initial vote had not been expected to yield a pontiff. The cardinals, the most ever to gather in a papal conclave, will retire to guest quarters at the Vatican and return on Thursday morning to continue voting. They will remain isolated during their deliberations, without phone or internet access and under oaths of total secrecy, until a two-thirds majority agrees on a candidate.

Conclave 2025 LIVE: View of St Peter’s Square with Conclave to be held on May 7 | Vatican Media LIVE | CNBC TV18
Live from Sant’Uffizio gate as cardinals arrive at the Vatican for a gathering of all members of the College of Cardinals after the pope’s death and before the start of the conclave.
ROME, ITALY (LOOKING AT VATICAN CITY) – View of the chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel roof, which will emit smoke at two fixed times in the day, once the conclave to elect a new pope starts on May 7.
With 179 cardinals present — 132 of them electors — the tenth congregation featured 26 interventions on key themes: the need for a Pope close to the people, the Church’s missionary nature, transmission of the faith, care for creation, and service to the poor. Who will be the next pope? Key candidates in an unpredictable process
A mourning mass is held in St Peter’s Basilica, as part of the official nine days of mourning, known as the “novendiali”, following the funeral of Pope Francis and ahead of the conclave to elect a new pope.
The decision will be made when the College of Cardinals begins meeting in conclave from 16:30 on 7 May in the 15th Century Sistine Chapel. It will involve 133 cardinals aged under 80, who will debate and then vote for their preferred candidate until a single name secures the support of two-thirds of them.
Their choice could have a profound impact on the Catholic Church and the world’s 1.4 billion baptised Roman Catholics, and it is harder than ever to predict who it will be.
With 80% of the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis himself, most are not only electing a pope for the first time, but will offer a broad global perspective. For the first time in history, fewer than half of those given a vote will be European.

Live exteriors covering departures after cardinals meet on Monday for their 5th congregation, a gathering of all members of the College of Cardinals taking place after the pope’s death and before the start of the Conclave to discuss major church affairs and decide a date for the Conclave.
VATICAN CITY – View of people at St Peter’s Square two days after the burial of Pope Francis. At 1500gmt Cardinale Baldassarre Reina presides over a mourning mass for Pope Francis on the third day of Novendiali (nine days of mourning after the Pope’s death) at St.Peter’s basilica.
The death of a pope Francis sets in motion a series of carefully orchestrated rites and rituals well before the conclave to elect his successor begins. They involve the certification of death and public display of his body for the faithful to pay their respects, followed by the funeral and burial.
Pope Francis, who died on Monday, revised various rites last year, simplifying the funeral rituals to emphasize his role as a mere bishop and allowing for burial outside the Vatican in keeping with his wishes. But the core elements remain, including the three key moments that must be observed between the death of a pope and his burial.
The reforms are incorporated into the slim red volume “Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis,” Latin for “Rite of Burial for Roman Pontiffs.”
While popes often tinker with the rules regulating the conclave that elects their successor, a revision of the papal funeral rites hadn’t been undertaken since 2000.
The changes became necessary after Francis expressed his own wishes, and after Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI died on Dec. 31, 2022. For Benedict, the Vatican had to work out the novelty of a funeral for the first retired pope in 600 years.
