Pope Conclave 2025 LIVE: Who Will Be Next Pope After Francis? | Cardinals Meet at Vatican | N18G

Live exteriors covering departures after cardinals meet on Monday for their 5th congregation, a gathering of all members of the College of Cardinals taking place after the pope’s death and before the start of the Conclave to discuss major church affairs and decide a date for the Conclave.
VATICAN CITY – View of people at St Peter’s Square two days after the burial of Pope Francis. At 1500gmt Cardinale Baldassarre Reina presides over a mourning mass for Pope Francis on the third day of Novendiali (nine days of mourning after the Pope’s death) at St.Peter’s basilica.
The death of a pope Francis sets in motion a series of carefully orchestrated rites and rituals well before the conclave to elect his successor begins. They involve the certification of death and public display of his body for the faithful to pay their respects, followed by the funeral and burial.
Pope Francis, who died on Monday, revised various rites last year, simplifying the funeral rituals to emphasize his role as a mere bishop and allowing for burial outside the Vatican in keeping with his wishes. But the core elements remain, including the three key moments that must be observed between the death of a pope and his burial.
The reforms are incorporated into the slim red volume “Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis,” Latin for “Rite of Burial for Roman Pontiffs.”
While popes often tinker with the rules regulating the conclave that elects their successor, a revision of the papal funeral rites hadn’t been undertaken since 2000.
The changes became necessary after Francis expressed his own wishes, and after Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI died on Dec. 31, 2022. For Benedict, the Vatican had to work out the novelty of a funeral for the first retired pope in 600 years.

Coffin containing the body of Pope Francis expected to leave Casa Santa Marta towards St. Peter’s basilica
Pope Francis lies in state in St Peter’s Basilica ahead of his funeral on Saturday. The public viewing begins on Wednesday morning, after his casket is taken by procession from the Vatican hotel where he lived to St. Peter’s. The procession starts at 0700GMT and is presided over by the camerlengo, the interim administrator of the Vatican, Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Members of the public can pay their respects to the late pontiff between 0900GMT and 2200GMT
Pope Francis, a voice for the poor who overcame fierce resistance to reshape the Catholic Church, has died at 88, the Vatican has announced. The pope’s death was announced on Monday morning by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo.
“Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” a statement from the camerlengo said.
“At 7:35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Pope Francis is anticipated to bring joy to Catholics globally during the Easter celebrations at the Vatican this Sunday, just weeks after battling pneumonia in the hospital.
Holy Mass and Urbi et Orbi blessing in St Peter’s Square, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been recovering since leaving the hospital on March 23 after a 38-day treatment period, is expected to deliver the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing from a balcony overlooking Saint Peter’s Square at noon on Sunday, marking the most significant Christian celebration.
The Holy See’s press service indicated that Francis will likely attend the Easter Sunday events, but has not confirmed his presence, stating it is contingent on his health.
Although his voice is still weak, there have been improvements in his breathing, and he has made two public appearances in the past week without the nasal cannula he has been using for oxygen. He may assign someone else the task of reading his Easter message, where he typically reflects on global conflicts and crises.
