Want to recreate the iconic paper game from Squid Game’s unforgettable recruitment scene? Today, I’ll show you how to make your own Ddakji pieces, exactly like those used in the series, using just a single sheet of A4 paper – no scissors or glue needed!
In Squid Game’s opening episode, we witness the mysterious recruiter challenging the main character Seong Gi-hun to a game of Ddakji. The stakes? 100,000 won for every win, but a slap in the face for every loss. This intense scene introduced millions of viewers worldwide to this traditional Korean children’s game, but Ddakji’s history goes far beyond its Netflix fame.
Ddakji (또각지), also spelled Ttakji, has been a popular Korean street game for decades. In the 1970s and 1980s, children would gather after school, creating these paper tiles from old comic books and magazines. Each player would carefully fold their gaming pieces, preparing for intense battles of skill and strategy.
The game’s rules are straightforward: players take turns throwing their Ddakji at their opponent’s piece lying flat on the ground. The objective is to flip over your opponent’s Ddakji using the impact of your throw. While the rules are simple, mastering the perfect throwing technique requires practice and precision – just as Gi-hun discovered in Squid Game!
In the series, this seemingly innocent game serves as the gateway to the deadly competition, with the recruiter using it to identify potential players. The game’s appearance in Squid Game perfectly captures its dual nature – a children’s pastime that can turn surprisingly competitive.
In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through creating your own Ddakji pieces that are perfect for:
– Practicing your Squid Game cosplay
– Teaching kids about Korean culture
– Organizing themed parties
– Having screen-free fun with friends
You’ll be amazed at how a simple A4 paper sheet transforms into a durable gaming piece capable of withstanding numerous battles. Whether you’re a Squid Game fan, interested in Korean traditions, or simply looking for a fun craft project, this tutorial will show you everything you need to know.
Stay tuned until the end for tips on perfecting your throwing technique and organizing your own (friendly!) Ddakji tournaments – no slapping required!
