The 3 jaw chuck is a staple of the machine shop. Whether it is a manual lathe or CNC, the 3 jaw chuck is essential to daily operation. But what happens when the chuck no longer runs true? Most shops will just replace it, but I have found most just need a good cleaning.
In this video, I tear down a 19.5″ Bison chuck I bought for one repeat job. It arrived and looked great, but upon doing the job, it was not great. This thing was so full of crap, that it hardly turned. Watch as I tear it down to expose a massive and stinky pile of ugly grease. Hidden in the grease was chips causing the problems. Not only does the chip cause difficulty tightening or loosening the chuck, but it will cause the jaws to be off. Thus causing run out!
