The inspiration behind this video:

A live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is in the works with original franchise director Dean DeBlois at the helm, and there’s already much to discuss ahead of the 2025 release date. The original How to Train Your Dragon introduced audiences to Hiccup, Astrid, the village of Berk, and the adorable-yet-deadly dragon Toothless back in 2010. Since then, two sequels and numerous TV spinoffs have arrived. DreamWorks and Universal are next taking a nod from Disney and delivering a live-action How to Train Your Dragon reboot.

Like the original animated franchise, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon will be loosely based on the original 2003 book by Cressida Cowell, with which it shares a title. The remake will bring Hiccup and Toothless into live-action, adapting the story of the original for a new audience. With the release date set and cast updates already arriving, it’s clear that the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake could be the start of another box-office-smashing franchise for DreamWorks and Universal.

The inspiration behind this video:

Two young Vikings prepare to face the fury of their ancient foes, as Mason Thames’ Hiccup and Nico Parker’s Astrid hide together in Berk’s training arena in a new image from How To Train Your Dragon’s live-action remake. The 2025 movie brings the world of Dreamworks’ beloved 2010 animated fantasy to life, as a Viking outcast strikes a friendship with a wounded and elusive dragon. Alongside Thames and Parker, the live-action How To Train Your Dragon adaptation also stars Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Ruth Coff, with Gerard Butler reprising the role of Stoic.

As part of its 2025 movie preview, USA Today has released a new still from How To Train Your Dragon. The image features Hiccup and Astrid armored and armed as they take part in the training every youth of Berk goes through to prepare them for their battles with dragons. The pair are hiding behind a barrier, with Hiccup noticeably out of his depth and nervous while Astrid is more battle-ready and trying to help her fellow student, holding his shoulder while likely offering some begrudging advice to the unready hero.

The inspiration behind this video:

Baruchel has been the biggest stalwart of the Dragons franchise, and as it stands, the 2025 movie will be the first show or movie to lack his involvement. His legacy in the animated saga is indisputable, as proven by how much his live-action replacement is allowing Baruchel’s countless performances as Hiccup to influence his own portrayal of the character. Logically, it wouldn’t make sense for Baruchel to reprise the role of Hiccup in live-action, as he would already have been too old to do so even in 2010. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be given a cameo as a different character.

Jay Baruchel isn’t a household name, but his voice part as Hiccup is his seminal role, so many fans of the Dragons franchise may not even recognize him if he does show up in the remake. While this doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be afforded the opportunity to make his live-action How to Train Your Dragon debut, it simply means it’ll be a more subtle thank you to the actor for bringing Hiccup to live for so many years.

The inspiration behind this video:

DreamWorks’ upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon has understandably replaced the actor playing the movie’s main character, but Hiccup’s original actor must still feature in the 2025 effort. Hiccup has been voiced so far by the same person since the first movie was released in 2010. Since then, he has gone on to reprise the role in every How to Train Your Dragon movie and TV show. While he hasn’t been confirmed to be part of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon cast yet, it would be surprising if he didn’t appear in some capacity.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon’s release date is set for June 13, 2025. So, there isn’t long left to wait until the remake hits cinemas. The first trailer suggests the movie will be a shot-for-shot remake of the original, with even Toothless’ iconic character design remaining intact. Mason Thames is stepping in to inherit the role of Hiccup, but he has some pretty big shoes to fill.

The inspiration behind this video:

With many wondering why DreamWorks chose to adapt How to Train Your Dragon into live-action, the studio’s teaser trailer confirms a major fear about the upcoming remake. Announced in February 2023, the new movie has been in the works for around two years. The project is recalling writer/director Dean DeBlois, who has been one of the most heavily involved creatives with the Dragons movie franchise to date. Those familiar with the original will probably experience very few surprises when watching the live-action version, begging the question of why a live-action How to Train Your Dragon cast has been assembled.

The animated How to Train Your Dragon movies and TV shows create a sprawling saga of the shifting dynamic between the franchise’s Vikings and their scaly adversaries-turned-allies. However, the upcoming remake won’t slot into the vast continuity that already exists but instead appears to be starting from scratch. DreamWorks isn’t the first studio to explore this avenue with an existing movie or franchise, but adapting this particular story has resulted in many raised eyebrows for several reasons. With so many exciting stories and fights across the Dragons franchise already, it’s unclear what a remake could offer.
