How to Make Your Movie Sound LIKE A PRO

Download

In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That’s the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time.

How to Make a Record-Setting Paper Plane

Download

If you want to make the best paper planes, you need to learn from a master. So we asked John Collins, who set the Guinness World Record for farthest flight by a paper aircraft in 2012, to teach us a thing or two about the squash fold and perfect winglets. In this tutorial, he shows us how to fold three planes:

The Suzanne—the plane he set the world distance record with, named after his wife.

The Tube—a tube-shaped plane you throw like a football.

And, finally, the Boomerang—a stunt plane capable of circling left and right and performing loops.

Ready to fly? Grab a stack of paper, press play (pause as often as you need to) and fold away.

How to Conduct an Orchestra

Download

We’ve all seen a conductor standing in front of an orchestra wielding a baton. All the baton waving might look random to the untrained eye, but there is meaning in every gesture. Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, shows us how he guides the musicians using his body and eye contact.

This Great Big Story was made possible by B.Grimm.
