Here’s how to make easy homemade play dough!

❋ Ingredients:
• Flour – 1 cup
• Salt – 1/2 cup
• Water – 1/2 cup
• Food color or washable paint (optional)

❋ Tip!
Prevent food color from staining your hands by mixing the dough and food color drops in a sealable plastic bag.

❋ Baking Instructions:
Bake the dough at 200°F until hard. The amount of time depends on size and thickness. Thin pieces might take 45-60 minutes, thicker pieces might take 2-3 hours. Check on your pieces in the oven every 1/2 hour or so until they are hard. To make your dough harden faster, bake at 350°F, but keep an eye on it because it might turn brown.

To completely seal and protect your dough art, apply a clear or paint varnish.

Learning how to learn | Barbara Oakley | TEDxOaklandUniversity

Download

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley is co-teaching one of the world’s largest online classes, “Learning How to Learn”,
She know firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. Dr. Oakley flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the U.S. Army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a new found determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.

Barbara Oakley, PhD, PE is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Her research focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior, and has been described as “revolutionary” by the Wall Street Journal. Oakley’s books have been praised by many leading researchers and writers, including Harvard’s Steven Pinker and E. O. Wilson, and National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates. Her book A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel in Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra), will be published by Tarcher-Penguin on July 31, 2014.

Prior to her academic career, Oakley rose from private to captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar. She met her husband, Philip, when she was working at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. Her experiences with well-intentioned altruism were shaped by her work as a Russian translator on Soviet trawlers on the Bering Sea during the early 1980s. Oakley was designated as an NSF New Century Scholar—she is also a recipient of the Oakland University Teaching Excellence Award (2013) and the National Science Foundation’s Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award. Oakley is an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

How to Make a Transparent PNG

Download

In this tutorial you are going to learn how to make a png image with transparency.

In this tutorial you are going to learn how to make a transparent png.

Step # 1 — Opening the Image

Start Photoshop and load the image that you want to give some transparency to. Here you can see we have a standard jpg image. In the layers panel right click on “Background” and click “Layer From Background”, click “OK” in the dialog box that appears.

Step # 2 — Creating Some Transparency

Now we will delete some of the image so that nothing is left, not even a background – in Photoshop transparency is indicated by a checked pattern. Click on the “Magic Wand Tool” in the menu on the left. Use this to select the part of the image that you want to remove, here we are removing the background to this portrait photograph. Hold down “Shift” and click to select multiple areas. When you have selected everything you want press the “Delete” key. Press “Control” and “D” on the keyboard.

Step # 3 — Saving the File

Now we need to save this file as a png with transparency enabled. Click “File” and then “Save for Web & Devices”. On the right make sure that the “Transparency” box is checked and then click “Save”. Name the photo, choose a location, and click “Save” again.

Step # 4 — Testing the Transparency

To make sure that the transparency has worked, click “File” then “Open” and locate the png file we just created and open it. Press “Control” and “A” then “Control” and “C” and navigate to another image. Press “Control” and “V” and you will see that there is no background where we previously deleted it and that is how to make a transparent png.
