Weaponizing the Weather: The Race to Make Clouds | How to Kill A Cloud (Full Film) | The Short List

Download

How to Kill a Cloud is a documentary of a Finnish female scientist trying to create rain in the United Arab Emirates desert. Can ambition be measured in rain?

‘The Short List’ is a collection of some of the world’s best documentaries, curated by VICE founder Suroosh Alvi. On the first Thursday of every month, we’re airing a brand new documentary on our YouTube.

Each episode features a full documentary accompanied by Alvi in conversation with the filmmakers and the films’ subjects. In his conversations with the filmmakers Suroosh explores the themes of the films, unpacks the journey the filmmakers embarked on when creating their projects, and delves into the documentaries’ impact on audiences.

This series aims to take conversations usually only privy to the film festival crowd and go deeper, sharing them with millions of VICE viewers around the world. These documentaries go beyond parachute journalism — they are immersive insights into global issues and subcultures.

Watch more from the Short List here, including films like ‘Wojnarowicz’, ‘Yung Lean: In My Head’ and ‘Showgirls of Pakistan’:

How to Make a Record-Setting Paper Plane

Download

If you want to make the best paper planes, you need to learn from a master. So we asked John Collins, who set the Guinness World Record for farthest flight by a paper aircraft in 2012, to teach us a thing or two about the squash fold and perfect winglets. In this tutorial, he shows us how to fold three planes:

The Suzanne—the plane he set the world distance record with, named after his wife.

The Tube—a tube-shaped plane you throw like a football.

And, finally, the Boomerang—a stunt plane capable of circling left and right and performing loops.

Ready to fly? Grab a stack of paper, press play (pause as often as you need to) and fold away.

How To Make Samosas with Chintan Pandya

Download

Chintan Pandya, chef of Rahi in the West Village and Adda in Queens, knows the secret to a perfectly crispy samosa: frying at two different oil temperatures. Potatoes, peas, and ajwain, an herb thought to have anti-bloating qualities, are also key components to this classic Indian street food. Chintan demonstrates how to use a pasta machine to give the dough a consistent thickness, as well as the proper way to fold samosas.

Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, shows us how he guides the musicians using his body and eye contact.

How to Make Pesto with Massimo Bottura, Chef of the #1 Ranked Restaurant in the World

Download

Massimo Bottura, the Italian restaurateur and chef-owner of three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana, knows a thing or two about homemade pesto. His restaurant just won #1 in the world on the prestigious Top 50 list.

Using a recipe from his cookbook, Bread Is Gold, Bottura loses the traditional pine nuts and uses breadcrumbs instead. The final product is a fresh and original pesto pasta dish from one of the best chefs in the world that’s still simple enough to make at home.
