I’m a dry cleaner and here are some common mistakes made when doing laundry:
1) Using too much detergent. You should max out at two or three tablespoons for large loads. Maybe a touch more for powder. Never more than two pods!
2) Try using hot water less frequently. Keep in mind that you probably think you’re much dirtier than you are. Cold water will do a great job for most loads so try and keep hot water reserved for those tough jobs.
3) Some products are not designed to be mixed, like baking soda and vinegar, or detergent and fabric softener. These two examples are great because both are lovely on their own, but counteract each other when used together.
4) Try to separate your clothes by color and then weight. You don’t want white lint on your dark garments and dark dye on your whites, they’ll look dingy and grey.
5) I would never tumble dry synthetic fabrics like your gym clothes.
6) Remove chlorine bleach from your laundry routine; it’s extremely damaging to your clothes. If you want to sanitize, try using the sanitizing cycle and a laundry sanitizer. If you want to whiten, use oxygen bleach.
