My becoming an actor wasn’t planned. My interest always lied in sports such as football, martial arts, gymnastics and dance.

My older brother, he did everything. He played baseball, he played basketball. Just being able to watch him as a youngster, wanting to be like him, wanting to play on the team with him and watching those older guys in my neighborhood play sports.

When I was a kid, I played sports a lot. My mom and dad were divorced, but I hung out in the neighborhood a lot, and it was all about sports. I would be out all day on the sand lot or on the hockey rink. My dad would take me to baseball games, but he worked so hard, and he would always fall asleep.

My symbol was always a polo player because I liked sports, and polo has a stylishness to it.

I’ve played sports pretty much my whole life, and that teaches you how to work with anyone, whether you like that person or you don’t, and whether you get along with them or you don’t. The circumstances don’t matter. Team work is part of life.

Homophobia in male sports is much stronger than in women’s sports; the locker room environment is a lot different. It’s going to be much more of a brave step, an earthshaking move, for a gay male athlete to come out.

When I was growing up, I played a lot of different sports. There was a time when I was playing field hockey, tennis, and soccer at the same time. I was actually quite good at all of those sports.

It wasn’t until 1999 when my idols Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly took home the women’s World Cup trophy at the Rose Bowl in front of 40 million TV viewers that I remember thinking how rare it was to see women play sports on TV.
