The people of Britain, under the leadership of Churchill, celebrated Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) with joy and relief, however, the war in the Pacific theater still raged on. Tragically, President Roosevelt passed away just weeks before VE Day, leaving the task of bringing the war to a close to newly appointed President Harry S. Truman.
