Iran attacks Israel: Tel Aviv says ‘majority’ of drones, missiles were intercepted

Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, in a retaliatory strike that wounded a seven-year-old girl and caused minor damage at an Israeli military facility.
The attack late on Saturday night set off air raid sirens in cities across Israel, including in Tel Aviv and West Jerusalem, and explosions were heard as Israeli air defences intercepted the projectiles.
The Israeli military said the Iranian salvo consisted of more than 300 “killer drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles”, but that 99 percent were intercepted, with help from forces from the United States and the United Kingdom.
The launches came from Iran, as well as from Iraq and Yemen, it said.

Explosive blasts reverberated through an Iranian urban center on Friday, reportedly due to an Israeli strike, although Tehran downplayed the event, signaling no intention for reprisal—a calculated move aimed at preventing broader conflict.
The limited scope of the attack and Iran’s subdued reaction both suggest effective diplomatic efforts to prevent full-scale war, particularly following Iran’s recent drone and missile assault on Israel.
Iranian media and officials characterized the explosions as the result of Iran’s air defenses intercepting three drones above Isfahan. Significantly, they portrayed the incident as an assault by “infiltrators,” sidestepping direct blame on Israel and thereby avoiding the necessity for retaliation.
An Iranian official informed Reuters that there are no immediate plans to retaliate against Israel for the incident.
Earlier Iran launched dozens of drones towards Israel in retaliation for an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month. The Israeli military said that it was on high alert and monitoring all targets. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the Israeli war cabinet at military headquarters in Tel Aviv after Iran’s attack. Meanwhile, the US said it stood by Israel and will “support their defence”. In response, Iran’s mission to the United Nations said the US must stay away from the conflict between Iran and Israel and warned that Tehran’s response would be more severe if Israel retaliates.

Booms and air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem early Sunday after Iran launched dozens of drones and ballistic missiles toward Israel in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East ever closer to a regionwide war.

The attack marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Condemnation was swift, with France saying that “Iran has crossed a new threshold with regard to its destabilizing activities and is risking a potential military escalation.” Britain called the attacks “reckless.”

Hamas video shows intense fighting in Gaza with Israel’s military

The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas released on Monday (January 29) an edited video it says shows fighting in the streets of Gaza’s Khan Younis.

The footage shows fighters carrying shoulder-mounted weapons systems and firing them at battle tanks. Reuters was not able to independently verify the location or the date when the video was filmed.

Earlier on Monday, the Israeli army said its forces had killed dozens of Palestinian gunmen throughout the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, including four who were spotted preparing to ambush troops near Al-Amal hospital in southern Khan Younis.

The armed wing of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad said fighters clashed with Israeli troops in several areas across the enclave overnight. Hamas’ armed wing said its fighters destroyed two Israeli tanks in Khan Younis.
