It also marked the second time Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit teamed up on screen, a pairing that was widely praised for their on-screen romance. Directed by Raj N. Sippy and featuring music by Bappi Lahiri, ‘Thanedaar’ also starred Jaya Prada, Dalip Tahil, Kiran Kumar, Paintal, Satish Shah, Sharat Saxena, and Tej Sapru in key roles alongside Sanjay Dutt and Jeetendra.
The story revolves around gangster Thakur Ajgar Singh (Kiran Kumar), who conspired to murder his enemy, Police Inspector Jagdish Chander (Dalip Tahil), leaving Chander’s two young sons orphaned. The elder son, Avinash (Jeetendra), is adopted by his father’s colleague, while the younger son, Brijesh (Sanjay Dutt), also known as Birju, sets out to avenge his father’s death by targeting his murderers. However, Birju is taken in by the Bad Guy Lawrence (Goga Kapoor) after being caught with blood on his hands.
The real story begins when the elder brother, raised as a good man, follows in his father’s footsteps to become a police inspector, while the younger brother, Birju, falls into a life of crime, ending up in jail. After his release, Birju attempts to rob a store, continuing his life of crime. How these two brothers eventually cross paths again forms the crux of the story, which can only be revealed by watching the film ‘Thanedaar.’

गैंगस्टर ठाकुर अजगर सिंह (किरण कुमार) अपने दुश्मन पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर जगदीश चंदर (दलीप ताहिल) की हत्या करने का साजिश रचता है और इस तरह इंस्पेक्टर के दो छोटे बेटों को अनाथ कर देता है। बड़े अविनाश (जितेन्द्र) को उसके पिता के सहकर्मी ने गोद ले लिया है, जबकि छोटा ब्रिजेश (संजय दत्त), उर्फ बिरजू अपने पिता के हत्यारे मारने के लिए उसके पीछे जाता है और बदला लेता है। इसका नतीजा यह निकला है कि उसके खून रंगे हाथों के देखकर पिता के मर्डरर्स के आदमी लॉरेंस (गोगा कपूर) बिरजू को अपने साथ ले जाते हैं। इस फिल्म में असली कहानी की शुरुआत तब होता है…जब दोनों भाइयों में से बड़ा भाई अच्छे इंसान के परवरिश से अपने पिता की तरह पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर बनता है और दूसरा छोटा भाई बिरजू गलत संगत में पड़ने से जेल की हवा खाते हुए रिहा होकर फिर से वही काम करने के लिए एक दुकान लूटने की कोशिश में जुट जाता है…आगे कैसे दोनों भाइयों की मुलाकात होती है यह तो आपको फिल्म को देखने के बाद ही जान पाएंगे…
