In the Central African Republic, the civil war has ended up destabilizing a country with an already fragile balance. The wealth of the underground does not trickle down into the demanding daily lives of the inhabitants. Cities are almost cut off from the world, like that of Ngoto.
The road leading there is impassable, ambulances no longer pass, so medical evacuations are done by motorbike. An ordeal for the sick. A race against time or rather a race against death. During the last civil war, many taxis and buses were destroyed or stolen.
Vehicles are lacking, so some bush taxis use livestock trucks. The journey is hellish for the passengers, but everyone maintains their good humor even when it comes to spending a night under the stars.
Director: Guillaume LHOTELLIER

On the island of Madagascar, the tracks are in poor condition, ravaged by the numerous tropical cyclones which ravage the region and the lack of maintenance. During the rainy season, which lasts almost six months, the roads deteriorate further. Here, only tractors are capable of tackling these tracks. At the wheel of his metal giant, Thierry’s mission is to transport four tons of food to a village cut off from the world. A six-hour drive from the capital, on the Hauts Plateaux, the village of Antanetibe organizes the great Malagasy ritual: “the turning of the dead”. In the capital, salvagers bring new life to everything that is broken. One of them, Marcelin, finds parts destined for the dumpster to transform them into everyday objects that he resells on the markets.

In Guinea Conakry, at the wheel of their truck, Mamady and her sons face torrential downpours which make the track nightmarish. The abundant rains and the 1,300 streams and rivers that run through the country gave it its nickname: the water tower. However, running water is rare in the country and, to have access to it, it is sometimes necessary to install giant cisterns. Transporting these tanks by bush taxi over the rutted tracks is no easy task. After the palm oil harvest, which provides a minimum of income for residents, only motorcycles can transport the precious liquid. Loaded with dozens of cans, they set off on chaotic tracks on which anything can happen.

In Brazil, in the state of Para, a convoy of tanker trucks loaded with fuel plunges into the Amazon rainforest along a dilapidated track, illegally bulldozed. Their mission is to deliver diesel to gold miners who use water cannons and diesel engines to destroy one of the world’s most precious forests. Nearby, Cécilio and his family, indigenous Kayapo people, are driven out of their home as their ancestral territory is submerged by the artificial lake of the Bello Monte dam. Rendered homeless, they wander in search of a hypothetical shelter. This situation highlights the threat to this region, intensified by 200,000 kilometers of illegal tracks in the Amazon, revealed by satellites. These tracks, mainly in the states of Mato Grosso, Para, and Rondonia, provide access to isolated areas and are not marked on any maps. They enable colonists, often poor and desperate, to invade the forest in search of easy riches. These destructive practices follow only the law of the mightiest and quick profit. Farmers, landowners, and traffickers also enter the forest, ravaging it under the guise of development. They covet precious wood and gold. Over time, the Brazilian state legalizes these lands and paves the main tracks, but the deforested lands used for grazing quickly degrade into deserts within 10 to 20 years. Colonists and traffickers then take their bulldozers to create new illegal tracks, invading and burning millions of hectares for their cattle, further exacerbating the Amazon’s agony.

World’s Most Dangerous Roads: Best Of – Burundi, Mali, Bolivia & Canada

World’s Most Dangerous Roads Best Of – Philippines, India, China & Bangladesh:

00:00:00 Burundi
The racing cyclists of Burundi have a dangerous job. But it’s a vital one for Burundi’s economy. Bicycles are the main means of transportation in one of the smallest countries in Africa. Bananas, the staple food in Burundi, are transported from the markets to a banana beer brewing factory. We accompany Tharcien, a bike courier, on his exhausting cross country trip on the Burundi Highway.

00:42:44 Mali
The air wants to flee the heat, but is too weak. It hovers just above the ground, heavy and weighed down by the oven-like heat. It turns wanly around itself, and tries to cool off by liquefying itself. It vibrates, it oscillates – but there is no escape. This is West Africa in late March. The Harmattan, the hot desert wind of the Sahara, is blowing without respite. It has no pity with the people who live here. Whoever wants to go from one place to another has to travel on roads that hardly deserve this name. They are dusty paths that don’t appear on any map. They are maneuverable only with great effort and for a few months of the year.

01:25:09 Bolivia
The Carretera de la muerte – the road to death- is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Year after year many people die here. We accompany trucker Omar and his co-driver Jaime on their trip across the Andes, encountering cyclists, mountain bikers and coca-farmers on the way.

02:07:29 Canada
The Canadian ice roads exist only for a few months in the winter when the ice is thick enough. The only time of the year when goods can be transported up to Northern Manitoba. We accompany the truckers Vlad and Hugh as well as the aboriginal Canadian Scott with his pick-up on their long journey to a village called God’s Lake. A risky trip in icy temperatures, sometimes even below – 60 degrees Celcius.

World’s Most Dangerous Roads: Best Of Asian Countries – Philippines, India, China & Bangladesh

World’s Most Dangerous Roads – Burundi, Mali, Bolivia & Canada:

00:00:00 Philippines’ Serpentines (2014)
The Halsema Highway, situated on the island Luzon, leads right through the Philippine jungle with its frequent fog and heavy rainfalls. Every trip on this so-called road is an adventure and highly dangerous. We accompany a bus driver and a taxi driver on their challenging trip across the mountains.

00:42:44 India – Leh-Manali Highway (2010)
It is a road of mountain passes and India’s access to the roof of the world – the Himalayas. This 475-kilometre long route at the northernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent connects the cities of Manali and Leh at the heart of the Ladakh region. The term “highway” applies quite literally, since the route traverses five of the highest drivable mountain passes in the world – among these the Lohtang La at 3,978 metres above sea level, the Lachulung La at 5,059 metres and the Tanglang La at 5,325 metres. Crossing these passes is a challenge for both vehicle and man. The mountain peaks, still snow-capped even in the depths of summer, wide variety of vegetation and the fantastic and craggy landscape turn any journey into a captivating adventure.

01:25:44 China – The Sichuan-Tibet Highway (2014)
The Sichuan Tibet Highway is the road of longing for many. It leads through fascinating landscapes and remote areas up to the Himalayan Mountains. We accompany truck driver Ren Taiping on his trip to the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa, encountering pilgrims, mountain bikers and nomads on this dangerous journey.

02:08:25 Bangladesh – The Nawabpur Road in Dhaka (2010)
In Bangladesh, the land with the highest density of population in the world (and the highest amount of corruption), the daily struggle to survive is fought everywhere, including the streets. Nowhere do people drive as brutally and recklessly as here. In Bangladesh you drive on the road like others drive with a bumper car: if you need space, you simply ram the car driving next to you. The police only came if there are fatalities. The biggest bottleneck in the transport system is the historical old town of Dhaka.
