Mohanlal Viswanathan (IPA: [moːhɐnlaːl ʋiʃʋʷɐn̪aːt̪ʰɐn]; born 21 May 1960) is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, film distributor, and director who predominantly works in Malayalam film industry besides also having sporadically appeared in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films.[3][4][5] Mohanlal has a prolific career spanning over four decades, during which he has acted in more than 400 films.[4][6] Mohanlal’s contributions to the Malayalam cinema have been praised by his contemporaries in the Indian film industry.[7][8][9] The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2001,[10] and Padma Bhushan in 2019, India’s fourth and third highest civilian honours,[11] for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2009, he became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army.[12][13] Mohanlal was named as one of “the men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema” by CNN.[14]

Mohanlal made his acting debut at age 18 in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978, but the film was delayed in its release for 25 years due to censorship issues. His screen debut was in the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in which he played the antagonist.[15][16] He continued to do villainous roles and rose to secondary lead roles in the following years. By the mid-1980s, he established himself as a bankable leading actor and attained stardom after starring in several successful films in 1986; the crime drama Rajavinte Makan released that year heightened his stardom.[15] Mohanlal prefers to work in Malayalam films, but he has also appeared in some of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Some of his best known non-Malayalam films include the Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997), the Hindi crime drama Company (2002) and the Telugu film Janatha Garage (2016).[17][18]

Mohanlal has won five National Film Awards—two Best Actor, a Special Jury Mention and a Special Jury Award for acting, and an award for Best Feature Film (as producer), also nine Kerala State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South and numerous other accolades. He received honorary doctorates from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in 2010[19] and the University of Calicut in 2018.[20]

Mohanlal is also known for his philanthropic endeavours. He founded the ViswaSanthi Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization that was started to create and deliver high-impact and focused programs to the underprivileged sections of society in the areas of Healthcare and Education.[21][22][23]

During 1977 and 1978 he was the Kerala state wrestling champion.[31]

Film career
Early years (1978–1985)
Mohanlal made his acting debut in 1978 with the film Thiranottam, which was produced and made by Mohanlal and his friends—Maniyanpilla Raju, Suresh Kumar, Unni, Priyadarshan, Ravi Kumar and a few others. Mohanlal played Kuttappan, a mentally disabled servant. Due to some issues with censorship, the film was not released on time. It took 25 years to release the film.[16]

In 1980, Mohanlal was cast in the lead antagonist role in Manjil Virinja Pookkal – the directorial debut of Fazil. The film became a major success.[32] Mohanlal’s friends had sent his application in response to an advertisement released by Navodaya Studio.[33] He auditioned for the role in front of a panel that included professional directors. Displeased with his appearance, two of them gave him poor marks, but Fazil and Jijo Appachan gave him 90 and 95 marks out of 100.[34] In an interview with Reader’s Digest in 2004, Mohanlal said that his looks as a young man might have fit the villain’s image.[35] His acclaimed negative roles include Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu and Kuyiline Thedi.[36]

By 1983, Mohanlal was credited in more than 25 feature films, most of them had him playing negative roles.[35] Films such as Ente Mohangal Poovaninju, Iniyengilum, Visa, Attakkalasham, Kaliyil Alpam Karyam, Ente Mamattukkuttiyammakku, Engane Nee Marakkum, Unaroo and Sreekrishna Parunthu changed his image.[vague] Through Sasikumar’s Ivide Thudangunnu, he became a successful hero with a “good heart”. Mohanlal played his first comic lead role in an ensemble cast in the 1984 comedy Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, directed by Priyadarshan, as a young man in love with a girl whom he mistakenly believes to be rich.[37] It also marked the beginning of the Mohanlal-Priyadarshan duo, who as of 2016, have worked together in 44 films.[38]

In 1985, he recorded a song for the film Onnanam Kunnil Oradi Kunnil.[37] Uyarangalil, Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu, Boeing Boeing and Aram + Aram = Kinnaram were some of his films in this period.

Yash began his career with appearances in several television series in the 2000s. He made his film debut in 2007 with Jambada Hudugi. The 2008 romantic drama Moggina Manasu, for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, proved to be a breakthrough role for Yash. His first film in a leading role, Rocky (2008), was poorly received by critics and a box office flop. He followed it up with a series of romantic films that were commercial successes.

Yash went on to establish himself as a leading actor of Kannada cinema with the college romance Googly (2013), comedy-drama Raja Huli (2013), fantasy action Gajakesari (2014), romantic comedy Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014), action film Masterpiece (2015) and action romance Santhu Straight Forward (2016). He won further praise for his performance in the sequel, K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022), which currently ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Indian film worldwide and second highest-grosser in India.

Yash promotes various social and philanthropic causes through the Yasho Marga Foundation. He is married to the actress Radhika Pandit. Yashomarga is a charitable foundation established by Kannada film star Yash and his wife Radhika Pandit. [4]

Early life and television roles
Yash was born on 8 January 1986 in Boovanahalli, a village in Hassan, Karnataka.[5][6] He was given two names: Naveen legally, and his mother’s side of the family named him Yashwanth.[7][a] Yashwanth was chosen as they believed his time of birth astrologically necessitated a name beginning with the letter ಯ (ya).[9] In keeping with a Hindu tradition of giving children a deity’s epithet, Yash was described as Nanjundeshwara (“poison-drinker god”, referring to Shiva).[9][10] Before starting his acting career, he was advised by others in the industry to adopt a stage name.[11] Desiring to stand out with a name that was unique for an actor in Karnataka, he shortened Yashwanth to Yash.[12]

Yash’s father, Arun Kumar Gowda, was a driver for the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and later the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation. His mother, Pushpa, is a homemaker.[13][14] He has a younger sister, Nandini, who is married to a computer engineer.[14] Yash aspired to be an actor from a young age and actively participated in theatre and dance competitions at his school in Mysore.[13] When he was young, his family also ran a provision store, where he would help out regularly.[15] Yash wanted to quit school and pursue full-time acting after completing grade 10 but had to complete senior school on the demand of his parents.[13] He studied at the Mahajana Education Society for all his school years.[16] His parents initially disapproved of his acting ambitions, and his father wanted him to be a government officer.[15] In 2003, they relented and allowed him to move to Bangalore at the age of 16 to work on a film as an assistant director, but stated that he would not be allowed to go back if he returned.[13] The project was cancelled after only two days of filming, but Yash stayed in Bangalore.[13] He stated he had ₹300 (equivalent to ₹1,100 or US$13 in 2023) with him at the time.[15] He joined a theatre group, the Benaka drama troupe, which was formed by dramatist B. V. Karanth.[17] He worked as a backstage worker and was paid ₹50 (60¢ US) per day.[13]

Yash eventually became a backup actor, and in 2004, portrayed Balarama, the lead role in a play.[13] While still working in theatre, he completed his Bachelor of Arts at Bangalore’s K.L.E. College.[16] He made his television debut the same year with the teleserial Uttarayana.[14] In 2005, he was offered a role in the teleserial Nanda Gokula, where he starred alongside Radhika Pandit.[13] He went on to appear in several other teleserials such as T. N. Seetharam’s Male Billu and Preeti Illada Mele.[14][13] Once Yash had secured a stable income, his parents moved in with him to Bangalore.[13] During this time, he was offered roles in seven films, but his insistence on having the script for each film made available to him was viewed as “arrogance from a newcomer” and often refused.[13]
