प्रोफेसर सतीश खुराना (राज कुमार) अपनी पत्नी सरला (आशा पारेख) और बहन लीना के साथ रहते हैं। अचानक प्रिसिंपल ने उन्हें प्रोमोशन देने से इंकार कर दिया ये कहकर कि किसी और को मिल गया। इससे सतीश को बहुत दुख होता है। इसी दौरान एक दिन, उनके दोस्त विजू मोहंती ने उनसे फोन के माध्यम से, एक अमीर बिजनेसमैन, रणजीत सिंह लोबो (डैनी डेन्जोंगपा) से मिलने का अनुरोध किया, ताकि उनके बेटे मंजीत को प्राइवेट ट्यूशन पढ़ा सके। पहले तो सतीश झिझकता है, लेकिन रणजीत की सादगी और व्यवहार को देखते हुए इसे स्वीकार कर लेते हैं। मंजीत किसी भी चीज़ में समय का पाबंद था, लेकिन शुरू में घमंडी और अवज्ञाकारी था। इसे एक चैलेज की तरह लेते हुए सतीश से मिलने के बाद उसमें सुधार होने लगता है। यह देखकर, रणजीत के दोस्त मदन तेजा (कादर ख़ान) और बाबूलाल भाकरी (जीवन) ने भी अपने बेटों विक्रम और पवन के लिए सतीश से प्राइवेट ट्यूशन लेने का अनुरोध किया।
सब कुछ अच्छा ही चल रहा था कि सतीश पर प्राइवेट ट्यूशन के जरिये परीक्षा के प्रश्नों का खुलासा करने का आरोप लगाया जाता है और उन्हें कॉलेज से निकाल दिया जाता है। अब सवाल ये उठता है आखिर प्रोफ्सर सतीश से किसी का दुश्मनी हो सकती है? कही ये बड़े बाप के बिगड़ी औलाद का तो काम नहीं?

गौली (श्रीनगरा किट्टी) उत्तरी कर्नाटक के सिरसी में एक चरवाहा है, जो अपनी पत्नी गिरिजा (पावना गौड़ा), चाचा कक्का (रंगायन रघु)और बेटी पुट्टव्वा के साथ रहता है। सातवीं कक्षा तक पढ़ी गिरिजा गांव के बच्चों में अकेली पढ़ी-लिखी है और वह गांव के बच्चों को भी अपनी थोड़ी-बहुत शिक्षा देती है। एक दिन, गिरिजा की क्लासमेट भूमक्का अचानक लापता हो जाती है, जहाँ इस घटना के कारण पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर कलिंगा (शरथ लोहितस्वा) और गौली के बीच टकराव होता है।
इंस्पेक्टर कलिंगा, लापता लड़की के बारे में पूछताछ के बहाने गिरिजा के साथ गलत व्यवहार करता है और उसे उससे धमकियाँ भी

फिल्म की कहानी दो भाइयों की होती है जो बचपन में अपने परिवार के साथ मुसीबतों का सामना करते है और अपनी ज़िन्दगी के अलग-अलग रास्ते चुनते हैं। जिसके कारण दोनों भाइयों के बीच एक दीवार कड़ी हो जाती है।
आनंद वर्मा (सत्येन कप्पू) मज़दूर संघ के नेता हैं और मज़दूरों के हक़ के लिए फैक्टरी मालिकों से लड़ाई करते है। फैक्ट्री मालिक उसके परिवार की जान की धमकी देते है जिससे डरकर आनंद उनकी बात मान लेता है। मज़दूर इससे गुस्सा होकर आनंद पर जानलेवा हमला कर देते है। आनंद घर छोड़कर भाग जाता है और मजदूरों से परेशान होकर आनंद की पत्नी सुमित्रा (निरूपा रॉय) अपने बच्चों, विजय (अमिताभ बच्चन) और रवि (शशि कपूर) के साथ मुंबई चली आती है। इससे पहले मजदूर विजय के हाथ पर “मेरा बाप चोर है” लिख देते है। अपने बच्चों को पालने के लिए सुमित्रा मजदूरी करती है। विजय भी पढ़ाई छोड़कर मजदूरी करने लगता है ताकि उसका भाई रवि पढ़ सके।
बड़े होकर विजय एक फैक्ट्री में मजदूर बन जाता है और रवि एक पुलिस ऑफिसर। विजय को लगता है कि दुनिया उसी की सुनती है जिसके पास पैसा है और सच्चाई के रास्ते पर चलने से सिर्फ़ कामयाबी मिलती है। रवि को सच्चाई और क़ानून में पूरा विश्वास है, लेकिन उसे क़ानून और भाई में से किसी एक को चुनना है। पैसे कमाने की चाह में विजय सोना तस्करी करने लगता है और फिर शुरू होती है दोनों भाइयों में तकरार की कहानी।
