The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas released on Monday (January 29) an edited video it says shows fighting in the streets of Gaza’s Khan Younis.

The footage shows fighters carrying shoulder-mounted weapons systems and firing them at battle tanks. Reuters was not able to independently verify the location or the date when the video was filmed.

Earlier on Monday, the Israeli army said its forces had killed dozens of Palestinian gunmen throughout the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, including four who were spotted preparing to ambush troops near Al-Amal hospital in southern Khan Younis.

The armed wing of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad said fighters clashed with Israeli troops in several areas across the enclave overnight. Hamas’ armed wing said its fighters destroyed two Israeli tanks in Khan Younis.

A video released by Hamas armed wing showing militants firing drones from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Sunday (October 8)

Another video released on Saturday (October 7) showed Hamas militants withdrawing from one of the settlements after allegedly carrying out an operation there.

Hamas began an attack at dawn on Saturday with a huge barrage of rockets into southern Israel, giving cover to an unprecedented, multi-pronged infiltration of fighters into Israel from Gaza, a narrow strip that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians.

Gunmen killed at least 250 Israelis in clashes throughout Saturday and into Sunday, and escaped back into Gaza with dozens of hostages. More than 300 Gazans were killed when Israel responded with one of its most devastating days of retaliatory strikes.

Israeli forces are battling to free hostages and repel Hamas fighters occupying eight areas near the border with Gaza despite regaining control of a key police station.

More than 300 people have so far been killed in Israel, including both soldiers, police and civilians. About 2,000 people have been injured and about 100 civilians and soldiers were kidnapped during the Hamas assault.

So far 313 Palestinians have died, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

An Israeli tourist is also reported to have been shot dead in Egypt.

Jake Marlowe, 26, a British citizen, is missing near Gaza. He had been providing security at a party in Israel when Hamas fighters overran the area and took hostages.

The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has told Israelis they are going into a “long and difficult war”.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, is separate from the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority, which runs the parts of the West Bank not under Israeli control. It was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in its entirety by the UK in 2021.

Hamas, the Islamist militant group, has released footage of what it claims to be a dawn raid on an Israeli military compound.

Binyamin Netanyahu has declared Israel is “at war” after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack from Gaza during a Jewish holiday, with thousands of rockets and armed fighters sent across the border to Israel.

The Israeli prime minister ordered the army to retaliate against the group as he mobilised reserve forces. He vowed that “the enemy will pay a price he has never known”. The Israeli military has already launched airstrikes on targets in Gaza, with witnesses reporting hearing heavy explosions.

Hamas militants launched the biggest attack on Israel in years this morning, with thousands of rockets fired into the country and gunmen crossing the border.

Mohammad Deif, the military commander of the Islamist movement, announced the start of the operation in a broadcast on Hamas media, calling on Palestinians everywhere to fight.

“We’ve decided to say enough is enough,” he said in a recorded message. “This is the day of the greatest battle to end the last occupation on earth.”

“The military declares a state of war alert,” it said in a statement. “The Hamas terrorist organisation had begun a massive shooting of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, and terrorists infiltrated into Israeli territory in a number of different locations.

“The Israeli Defence Forces will defend Israeli civilians and the Hamas terrorist organisation will pay a heavy price for its actions.”
